Cataract

The loss of transparency of the crystalline lens, which is the natural lens of the eye, does not let pass clear cut light to the retina, where images are formed, determining a progressive loss of vision.

What causes it?

Although the age of the patient is usually the main reason of this condition it can also be caused by:

  • Genetic factors
  • Traumas
  • Previous ocular diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Certain drugs
  • Congenital (occurs since birth)

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms that appear in eyes with cataract are usually:

  • Blurry vision.
  • Photophobia (discomfort to light).
  • Difficulty in reading or watching television clearly or driving at night
  • Changes in glasses graduation.

How is it diagnosed?

It is detected by the ophthalmologist trough an exploration of vision and the eyeball through a slit lamp. It usually occurs at the age of 60-70.

What is the treatment?

The treatment of cataracts is surgical.

The procedure is performed under local or topical anesthesia (eye drops), it is a short painless intervention, always performed with special microscopes and wich offers a quick recovery.

The most commonly used technique today is the Phacoemulsification , used in 98% of cases, consisting of incisions smaller than 2.2 millimeters.

At surgery we replace the cloudy lens with an intraocular lens suitable to each individual patient’s graduation. The intraocular lens we can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism as well as eyestrain thanks to the use of premium lenses.

Although this is a surgery that provides good results do not forget that it must be performed by an experienced ophthalmologist, as malpractice could cause irreversible damage to the eye such as corneal opacity, glaucoma or retinal detachment.
